Equine Science Minor
Major Code: EQSCThe Equine Science minor is designed for students who wish to supplement their non-equine academic major with studies in equine science. Three courses (9 credits) are required of all equine science minor students and the six remaining credits are from their desired area of emphasis. Upper-level courses may be selected by the student to allow further breadth of study in equine nutrition, health issues, lameness, reproduction and breeding, animal genetics, physiology or business (6 credits). With completion of this minor, students will have a foundation of theoretical and practical knowledge of the equine industry.
Courses in the minor are appropriate for students with and without prior academic or practical experience with horses. While the minor is equine focused, it is designed for maximum flexibility to attract students who may pursue occupations or enhance their marketability in equine-related businesses, laboratories and pharmaceutical and feed companies or continue further educational opportunities in graduate and/or professional degrees such as veterinary medicine, in addition to furthering their personal interests by adding equine studies to their primary major.
Program Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of the minor, students will be able to:
- Develop critical thinking skills to manage problems and develop foundational understanding of equine management, nutrition and anatomy to support advanced studies or diverse careers in the equine industry.
- Understand concepts and terminology unique to the equine industry while pursuing a major in fields such as business, the sciences, liberal arts or pre-health professions.
Curriculum Requirements
A minimum of 15 credits is required for completion of the minor. Students must be enrolled in a Bachelor's degree program in order to declare a minor.
