Frontline Supervisor Microcredential
Major Code: MFLSThe Frontline Supervisor microcredential was developed in partnership with SUNY and the Office of People with Developmental Disabilities (OPWDD).
The Frontline Supervisor microcredential offers students in SUNY Morrisville’s community partner agencies the opportunity to pursue educational requirements to be credentialed by the National Alliance of Direct Support Professionals. This is professional credential recognized in the developmental disabilities field across the country.
As part of the Human Services, A.A.S. degree program (#0604), the Frontline Supervisor (FLS) microcredential includes three courses. This includes two 3-credit courses (HUMS 202 Management and Administration in Human Services and HUMS 302 Principles of Supervision) and one 1-credit course (HUMS 150 Special Topics in Human Services: Leadership in Person-Centered Planning) for a total of 7 credits.
- HUMS 202: Management and administrative strategies of human service program delivery are central to student learning in this three-credit course. The course will provide an overview of topics associated with human service management, including: Setting organizational direction; decision-making and problem solving; professional communication; program design and development; personnel management; and enhancing agency sustainability.
- HUMS 302: Supervision of human service programs, nonprofit organizations and social services agencies will be central to this three-credit course. This includes supervision of individuals, groups and multi-disciplinary teams. The course will look at supervision from an organizational learning perspective with emphasis on the relationship between supervisory skills, organizational structure and staff and client outcomes.
- HUMS 150: Leadership in person-centered planning is the special topic for this 1-credit course. Students will gain a deeper understanding of the oversight of the goal-planning process as it occurs with individuals, groups and families. The importance of the process of planning being directed by the participant receiving services will be emphasized throughout the course.
Each of these courses address the National Frontline Supervisor Competencies that have been approved by the National Alliance of Direct Support Professionals (NADSP). Upon completion students will be able to apply the knowledge, skills and ethical understanding current with best practices in frontline supervision to fulfill the educational requirements for completion of the National Alliance of Direct Support Professional Frontline Supervisor credential.
Upon successful completion of this microcredential program, students will be able to:
- Provide culturally appropriate direct support to participants using person-centered planning;
- Oversee, monitor and evaluate support planning efforts;
- Coordinate and facilitate support network meetings and communication strategies related to goal planning;
- Coordinate staff to assist in the facilitation of community inclusion for participants across the lifespan;
- Increase their capacity to promote professional relationships and teamwork;
- Utilize best practices around recruitment and retention of employees;
- Provide supervision, training and professional development of staff;
- Oversee service management and continuous quality improvement;
- Advocate for increased opportunities for participants that promote safe, respected and valued membership in the community, and;
- Support their self-development.
A total of 7 credits is required for completion of the microcredential. Students will receive a digital badge upon completion.
